Hayes Elementary School is an attractive and child-friendly facility, located just one block from the Hayes Presidential Center. Hayes is a "neighborhood" school with approximately 90% of the students walking to school. Students come from different cultural backgrounds including 11% African-American, 18% Hispanic/Latino, 14% multiracial, and 57% Caucasian.

Over the years the students at Hayes have been provided with a variety of innovative teaching techniques and programs.   Comprehension strategies are being used during reading at all grade levels, along with the First Steps philosophy which is implemented in grades K-3.  Grades K-6 are all involved in the Every Day Math program, as well.  Other programs include parent volunteer program, student council, and safety patrol.

Our students are recognized for hard work through the nine-week honor roll and the end of year academic banquet.  Perfect attendance is recognized each nine weeks and also at the of the year assembly.  Students have opportunities to be "Caught Being Good" and are rewarded for every five cards.

During the 1999-2000 school year, Hayes was the recipient of the WTOL Weather Net Station. It has been installed in the computer lab for anyone in the school to access. It is being used daily as part of the morning announcements.

During the 2004-2005 school year, Hayes was awarded the Ohio Reads Continuation Grant for $10,500.  This grant will be used to improve the teaching of comprehension strategies and for the purchase of reading materials in the classroom and building.

Parents are an integral part of Hayes Elementary. There are volunteers that run the "At Home Reading" program. Many classrooms use parents to help individual children.  Parents, volunteers, and community members are always welcome at Hayes.
